Last month we posted this quote about the infamous and highly successful Ikea Facebook Tag campaign:

Some of the best campaign strategies are simple, and none simpler than using the default “tagging” tool on facebook to help create a bit of buzz for an online competition. People were told that the first to tag their name on any item, would win it. (quote from: Digitalbuzzblog)

Ever since we got numerous requests from clients and others to come up with some kind of similar concept to promote their brands or products. Although we do think the Ikea was one of the smartest campaigns ever to be executed on Facebook and we did develop some differentiated but similar concepts our answer has been, is and will be: ” NO, we can’t. It’s ILLEGAL!”

“Illegal you say?” Yes, illegal and could and probably will result in Facebook blocking your brand page. Forever! You should not want to take that risk.

What happened? Well, all that happened is that Facebook has changed its policies on promotions last December. You’ll find the new Facebook Promotions Guidelines here. Long read and complex legal mumbo jumbo, but a must if you consider using Facebook for your marketing programs.

InsideFacebook quoted a Facebook spokesperson on the Ikea campaign as:

For example, a few weeks ago, an Ikea store in Sweden ran a promotion on their Facebook Page in which users who tagged photos of furniture with their names first won the items as prizes. A Facebook spokesperson told us today that the promotion was indeed in violation of the new policies and would not be allowed to run today.

Now what’s illegal and in violation of these new policies? Illegal and ban worthy are all promotions that requires a user to;

  • tag themselves in the photo.
  • to change their status in any way
  • to change their profile picture
  • to answer a question in a status update
  • any kind of response in the status
  • like a photo or an update
  • add friends
  • respond with a photo not in a specific application

And last but certainly not least all promotions need to run through an application that does not use any of the basic functionality of Facebook.

Does that come across to you as Facebook took away all the fun? It shouldn’t and it didn’t to us neither. We’ve been developing and building a variety of great, funny and very successful Facebook certified promotions after these new policies came to be. Also with some smart thinking and the skills or our engineers we build clever simulations that generated the same effects or even better.

So be advised, do read the new Facebook policies on promotions and contests, and do play it Safe! There’s a lot we still are allowed to do; give us a call and we’ll show you some of our pretty smart solutions, but do not start promotions or contests similar like this or ban doom will be upon your Facebook brand page:

The next generation of iPhones will contain a ‘point of purchase’ system, and ‘retail biometrics’ like face and fingerprint recognition. Apple has always been a trendsetter and innovator with new consumer-centric functionality. Without a doubt Android and its’ partners (HTC, Sony Ericsson) will follow very soon.

Implications for Retail will be that E-Commerce will reach the physical shop itself and physical point of sales. With consumers scanning, informing, augmenting for info and paying with their phone.

Creating augmented reality with use of Flash is becoming a mainstream thing quickly. Innovative and early-adopting marketeers have been applying this new magic to get attention on their brand.

From a technical point of view the facilities for creating augmented flash applications are readily available and very easy to use for one experienced with Flash and Actionscript3.

This is due to Opensource toolkits like FLARtoolkit, which stands for Flash Augmented Reality Toolkit. Combined with 3D object rendering in flash, with use of 3d toolkits like Papervision3D, very neat marketing concepts can be made. Like this one which combines the augmented result with the social media platform Facebook.

For the technical-savvy who want to know how to create 3D augmented reality app’s, and have the time to invest 60 minutes, take a look at this: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/max-2009-design/designing-for-augmented-reality (after this you should be an expert).

Augmented reality for usage in retail has already had some promising pilots such as the lego-case. In this case a small kid holds up a box of lego in front of a camera. On the screen he sees whats in the box.

The future is (fashion) retail is shown in a humorous way by Cisco. In the video a vision of the near future, ca 2015, is made on use of augmented reality in fashion retail stores.

In the video a very high-tech version (shrinking clothes to fit, and modelled in 3D) of augmented reality is shown. Combined with mobile payments. Although this may seem to be farfetched for many retailers, mobile payments are already very real. See www.myorder.nl for instance.

At the present a 2D version of augmented reality fit for fashion retail is available. Focussed on e-commerce customers, and combining social media aspects such as contact with facebook-friends where you can ask advice on your new (potential) new clothing.

The future is already very near for (broad) commercial use of augmented reality in retail. Forecasts, including Gartners hypecycle, state that it will be commercially usable within 2 – 4 years.

Very  interesting and challenging have arrived for (fashion) retailers. New possibilities to connect with the customer, and the challenge of chosing and enabling available technologies in a timely and efficient way.

Cloudcomputing is now available for music artists willing to easily manage and distribute their music.

The platform takes the daily hassle out of receiving, sending & distributing music for artists, record labels & other music professionals.

Soundcloud has been booming the pas 6 months as can been seen in a quick analysis of the search volume in 2009. Soundcloud.com provides applications that give the artists the possibility to provide musical content to radio, sell their music directly to the consumers through theBizmo microstore.

Soundcloud is a UK based inventation and winner of two Techcrunch awards. In it’s own way Soundcloud.com is the Flickr for (semi-)professinal music artists and a good example how internet and social media is impacting the creative industry by lowering production and distribution costs.

Also, the support for integrating with the soundcloud platform is very good. Opening the way to really integrate soundcloud as the music-source for all types of (social-)media, including radio and downloadable music.

A nice social feature shown in the above music clip is participation comments along the music-timeline.
